Artek Americas

Why I like it: Artek is an innovative company building on the heritage of its founders, Alvar Aalto among others (whom I admire). It offers functional products with timeless aesthetics.

About the shop: “Artek was founded in 1935 by four young idealists, Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl. The business idea of the company was “to sell furniture and to promote a modern culture of habitation by exhibitions and other educational means.” The founders of Artek advocated a new kind of environment for everyday life. They believed in a grand synthesis of the arts and wanted to make a difference in town planning as well as architecture and design. The cornerstones of the company’s product development strategy are ethics, aesthetics and ecology. In Artek, this translates into a combination of high quality, timeless classics and strong ideology in design thinking.”

Mini Mioche

Why I like it: All clothing at mini mioche does not only stands the test of time in terms of both style and quality, it is ethically and locally made. You’ll find great basic and layering pieces for babies and infants, as well as lovely toys and accessories for kids room.

About the shop: “In an industry dominated by production in low wage countries, ‘MADE IN CANADA’ is something rarely seen on the origin label of any fashion product. Each and every piece of mini mioche is designed and manufactured in Toronto, Canada. Our product is made in a safe, clean factory environment by skilled seamspeople who are paid a fair living wage. mini mioche also believes you should be able to buy stylish, comfortable and affordable fashion for your little one without harming the environment, which is why all of our products are made with organic cotton or other eco-friendly fabrics. mini mioche organic cotton is a more environmentally friendly option over conventional cotton clothing lines – which typically use chemicals and farming processes that are harmful to the environment.”

Why I like it: It is a one-stop online gifts shop, featuring innovative and unusual gifts from Scandinavia’s leading cultural institutions, designers and artists. It has a nice selection of artworks, books and ceramics. And with every purchase, you support Nordic cultural institutions.

About the shop: “Today our cultural institutions, our guardians of this cultural heritage, are also leading the way in expressing what is truly Nordic and experiences in Scandinavian lifestyle, by offering the best in Nordic design and art. Culture Nordic’s mission is to present the very best in Nordic gifts from Scandinavian museums, designers and artists through a single check out. Each gift tells a story and is an authentic expression of our unique Nordic heritage.”

Why I like it: espoo. is a leading retailer of Scandinavian design in Belgium. Their main goal: To feature design that brings joy in everyday life.

About the shop: “espoo. was the first interior design shop in Belgium that shows some of Scandinavians best design brands in a whole new concept. The roots of espoo. have remained Scandinavian but are now woven with brands from the entire world. A bit further on the road, we opened espoo. bütik in 2013. While espoo. mainly focusses on the furniture- and lighting collections, espoo. bütik shows accessories and carefully selected design objects.

We believe in design that tells a story and we carefully select products that last for ages. No nonsense, simple and easygoing. The concept of espoo. was created by a young team, resulting in a new, fresh and pure design store that stands out thanks to its plainness and ease.”
