Being an entrepreneur and small business owner, I love to hear success stories of talented people who started companies, with the goal to make a difference and to to bring something new to the market; people driven by a vision, a passion, a curiosity, and a determination; people with a mission.

Today I would like to introduce you Thomas Nissen, who founded THE POSTER CLUB. You know me by now, I am a huge fan of art, and I believe a home is not complete without it. It is only natural that Thomas’ mission to gather the best prints/posters and making them accessible to all truly resonated with me. I can spend a tremendous amount of time checking out his shop, filled with awesome pieces. Have a look, and your wish list will only get longer – You’ve been warned!

Q: Tell us a little about yourself / Who are you, and what do you do?
A: My name is Thomas, I’m 36 years old and live in Copenhagen with my wife and two kids, a daughter of 6 and a son of 3. I own and run the webshop THE POSTER CLUB full time.

Q: What inspired you to start your shop?
A: The idea for the shop actually came at a time when I was searching for some posters for our own home. I had a really hard time finding something I liked. I actually didn’t really know what I liked either, as it was nearly impossible to get and idea of what was out there. Google wasn’t much of a help on this. I really felt that all I needed was a place that could provide a good, solid selection, and show it in a inspiring way. When I couldn’t find that, I quickly realized I had to do it myself.

Q: What sets your shop aside from it’s competitors?
A: The selection is unique in that sense that we bring together posters that are trending and seen in scandinavian interior design, often with a feminine touch, and mixed with more typical art prints and edgy photo art. At the same time, many of the posters are only available in our shop or in a few other places, making the selection even more unique.

Q: Who or what influences your style? To what do you attribute your wonderful aesthetic?
A: Well, living it Copenhagen you get exposed to great scandinavian design, fashion and architecture every day. The style here is often clean and minimalistic, and that tends to rub off on your own preferences and style as well.

Q: How do you find the pieces/products for your store?
A: We are always on the lookout for great new posters for the store, so we try to keep up on all social platforms, read a lot of interior and design magazines, and spend hours searching different art communities, etc. As we grew and became more known, we are now also fortunate enough to be contacted almost every day by talented people who want to collaborate with us or sell their posters/prints through us. Thats truly something we appreciate, it is always interesting to see new things.

Q: What are the biggest challenges you face with running your own store?
A: To be honest we are not facing that many challenges at the moment (knock on wood). Things are actually running very smoothly. If I have to mention anything challenging from time to time, I’d say it’s the technical setup. With so many different devices and different web browsers available, it can be really difficult to provide the same good user experience on your webshop for everybody, but we try our best to stay ahead or at least to keep up!

Q: What do you love most about having your own store?
A: Thats easy. The flexibility, without a doubt! If I feel like picking up the kids early, taking a ride on my bike during the day or something else, I can, and work in the evening instead. I love that! A the same time however, that flexibility can also be difficult to handle. The boundaries between work and family life are sometimes non-existing, the computer and phone are always within reach… It’s really easy to get caught up in some work related stuff. But with some basic ground rules, I’m getting better at separating the two things.

Q: What are you proud of?
A: Many of my friends often ask me if I’m proud of what I’ve build with THE POSTER CLUB and its success. I really don’t think of it that way, as I’m always thinking about the next step and plan on how to develop the shop and the concept further. I don’t feel like I have reach a finish line, the race is still on. But of course, I’m both happy and proud of what I have achieved so far.

Q: Do you have any special projects in the pipeline or exciting future plans?
A: Yes, lots of news are coming! In about a month, we will launch a new exclusive collection of posters for a very well-now danish designer, and they will only be available on our shop to begin with. I’a very much looking forward to that! And after that we have another really exciting collab coming up with another big danish design brand. All in all, lot’s of things are happening!

Q: What are your favorite pieces/products at the moment?
A: The recent collab we did with Silke Bonde is definitely on the list, with her two prints ‘Cove’ and ‘Leaf Me’. I absolutely love her work. But also the very unique art pieces from Copenhagen-artist Anne Nowak are very high on the list, and we do also have one of her prints hanging in our living room. Well, actually is more like standing on the floor in the living room, but hopefully, I’ll soon find the time to hammer in that nail in the wall :-) ”
