While we are shoulder-deep in the wooden kitchen trend, I am predicting that a new development is on the horizon.
While wood will remain the favorite material for cabinets, stainless steel will make a comeback in the near future. I’ve already started seeing a few stunning examples on my Pinterest or Instagram feed, some of which I am sharing with you below.
We easily imagine stainless steel kitchens in an industrial loft, but they also blend in perfectly with many interior design styles and homes. Whether it is combined with classic, period details or with barely anything at all in a strictly minimal space, the look is quite striking.
The metal can also be considered a “neutral” because it pairs beautifully with warm or cool colors, dark or light wood finishes, marble, concrete, terrazzo, leather, glass, etc.
Stainless steel is hygienic and easy to clean, warp-, heat- and stain-resistant. It reflects the light around the room, adds depth, and makes a space brighter.
You can choose between a polished, mirror-like surface for a more glamorous look (but be ready to see all the fingerprints) or a brushed, velvet or satin finish, which will limit the reflectivity. While it is very durable, your heart will ache after making the first scratch… but it is a material that ages well, and many say it only gets better with time.
Consider using stainless steel as a backsplash or a worktop if the full look is too much. A big perk is that it can be as thin as 1.6 mm or wrapped over the edge to create a thick, chunky edge, and you can even have a custom sink molded directly onto the countertop.
The material can be blackened and antiqued, too, adding to the numerous possibilities it offers.
A few years ago, Ikea offered stainless steel fronts and panels for its cabinets (see the fourth picture below), and I am ready to bet that it will eventually (soon?) bring them back into its assortment – Time will tell :)
