“Officially known as CH07, but most widely known by its nickname, the Shell Chair was first conceived by Wegner in 1963, but didn’t receive its due recognition until many years later.” says Carl Hansen & Son. “Now, widely renowned for its minimalist design and comfort, the Shell Chair has become Carl Hansen & Son’s best selling lounge chair. For its 50th anniversary issue, the always innovative Shell Chair serves as a foil to Maharam’s diverse range of textiles including homespun wool textures, re-editioned designs of the Wiener Werkstätte and Alexander Girard, and collaborations with Hella Jongerius and Paul Smith. As such, each version of the 20 Shell Chairs tells a different story.
Each of the chairs, enlivened with the palette of some of Maharam’s most famous textile designs and coordinating wood frames, will soon be available to consumers. All 20 Shell Chairs are on display in Carl Hansen & Son’s showroom at 304 Hudson Street in New York City through June 17, 2013.
