Meet Holly Hallberg, Founder of Design Shop HUSET

, , , , , , , By Catherine Lazure | Nordic Design

I would like to introduce you to Holly Hallberg, the lady behind a fantastic online shop: HUSET. Holly has been a believer in Nordic Design for a few years now, and I am proud to count her as a loyal sponsor. Her shop is a treasure trove for Scandinavian design fans, whether it’s for well-known brands or young independent designers. The collection is well-curated and consists of lean, clever, and contemporary items for modern living.

Today, HUSET is revealing a completely revamped website! And to celebrate, Holly is giving a 10% discount to Nordic Design readers with the code NORDICLOVE, valid from June 6th until June 17th 2016. So head over there to shop your heart out!

Being an entrepreneur and small business owner, I love to hear success stories of talented people who started companies, with the goal to make a difference and to to bring something new to the market; people driven by a vision, a passion, a curiosity, and a determination; people with a mission. I was curious as to find out more about Holly, HUSET and the story behind the brand.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself / Who are you, and what do you do?
A: I’m an American girl who fell in love with a Swedish guy and started a Scandinavian housewares company with an online store and a physical store in Venice California called HUSET.

Q: What inspired you to start your shop?
A: On my first visit to Scandinavia with my then boyfriend, I instantly fell in love with the modern Scandinavian look. Since at the time there wasn’t much of this beautiful design in my home country, I had the idea to bring this beautiful clean-lined aesthetic Stateside and see if there were more people like me, that thought it was lovely as well.

Q: What sets your shop aside from it’s competitors?
A: We love to offer the mainstream Nordic brands, but what I think really sets us apart is our strong earnest to offer the smaller less-known designers from Scandinavia that don’t yet have an outlet in the United States yet.

Q: Who or what influences your style? To what do you attribute your wonderful aesthetic?
A: I was surrounded by design from an early age. I grew up with a house designer/builder father and architect /designer mother. I have always been interested in beautiful design.

Q: How do you find the pieces/products for your store?

A: Traveling to Scandinavia every summer and winter. Attending Fashion Week in Copenhagen twice a year, other design Fairs in Scandinavia, as well as following many Scandinavian designers blogs, social media and the like.

Q: What are the biggest challenges you face with running your own store?
A: Education is a big factor. Many items we carry are handmade, and handmade in Scandinavia, which puts the price tag a little higher than items that come out of the far East. The craftsmanship is lovely, but sometimes the customer is too used to lower quality pieces. We love sharing our designers stories, quality, commitment to design and we like offering that to our customers.

Q: What do you love most about having your own store?
A: The physical store is an amazing place to meet with our customers face to face. I still very much enjoy the design discoveries as well. Getting a chance to fly back to Scandinavia and meet with the designer and companies we carry is still a blast. Visit us: 1316 1/2 Abbot Kinney Blvd, Venice CA 90291

Q: What are you proud of?
A: We have very loyal customers and they are amazing!

Q: Do you have any special projects in the pipeline or exciting future plans?
A: Currently we are about to launch our new webstore, and there are some very interesting things to look forward to down our current path. Stay tuned to see some very interesting new concepts within the Huset brand.

Q: What are your favorite pieces/products at the moment?
A: We are the first retailer in the U.S. to carry the wonderful work of Mette Duedahl. Her work is beautiful and we excited.
